Dubai's 'The Tower' 100 metres taller than Burj Khalifa: Alabbar

Emaar Properties, Dubai’s largest property developer, will commence work on The Tower, the centerpiece of 6-square-kilometre Dubai Creek Harbour development, next month, which will be 100 metres taller than 828-metre Burj Khalifa, company Chairman Mohammed Alabbar told CNN in an interview.

“The tower will have a boutique hotel, few floors of gardens, restaurants, observation [decks] and function halls. The plaza will be much bigger than this [Downtown] plaza because of the sheer size of the tower and the cables… but what we will do with the plaza and how we beautify it and real estate around it will be quite a job,” Alabbar said.

“It adds value to real estate. The new Burj will have cables supporting the building… the cables are almost like jewelry, and Calatrava has done a fabulous job.”

The tower, yet-to-be named, will be ready before Dubai hosts Expo 2020, starting October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021.

In April 2016, Alabbar said at the launch of the $1 billion (Dh3.67 billion): “We are keeping the height quiet at this stage… probably we announce when we open up the tower. It will be notch taller than Burj Khalifa.”

He added: “The tower is our tribute to the positivity, energy and optimism that Dubai and the UAE celebrate, led by a leadership committed to all-round progress. A shining beacon of hope for the world, celebrating diversity and human achievements, this new iconic landmark further highlights the country’s ambition and futuristic vision and enhance our nation’s pride.”

# Swinging platforms

Emirates 24|7 revealed earlier that the tower will have swinging platforms and open elevators.

“There will be swinging platforms so people will be able to go into the platform and then the platform will turn and you will in the viewing deck,” Santiago Calatrava Valls, the project architect, told this website.

The tower, with 18 usable floors, draws design inspiration from the lily and evokes the image of a minaret, which is a common feature and distinctive aspect of Islamic architecture.
