A new water transport route by electric abra has been launched on Mamzar Lake, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced.

The electricity-powered traditional abras depart just off Mamzar Park and can be rented for a ride around the water landscape every day.

Those interested in the water ride can charter a boat for 30 minutes or 60 minutes, for Dh60 or Dh120, while one abra can be shared by 20 persons.

The service is currently available between 10am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm daily.

The service will be kicked off by deploying 3 abras but the number can be increased depending on the growth of demand for the service by marine transport enthusiasts, said Hussain Khansaheb, Director of Marine Transport at the RTA.

The abra is a traditional mode of transport which has been used to cross the Dubai Creek for many years. The electric abra was introduced recently as a more environment-friendly alternative.

The electrical abra does rounds in Global Village and Madinat Jumeirah, and was last year introduced on the Burj Khalifa waterfront, where the traditional boats circle around the fountain show.

“Through this service we are seeking to broaden and enhance the scope of marine transit means in the Emirate of Dubai and contribute to leveraging the tourist movement in the Emirate through providing this enjoyable mass transit means for residents, tourists and visitors,” added Khansaheb.
