Elevator repairman cut to pieces in Sharjah lift

The Indian elevator repairman who died on Sunday while servicing a lift in a building in Sharjah was working alone at the time of the incident.

Ajith, 28 from Kollam in Kerala and an employee of Thyssenkrupp died following an accident at a residential apartment in Sharjah.

Usman, the watchman of the building No. 172 located near Parthas in Rolla said the lift was in proper working condition and routine maintenance work was being carried out at the time of the incident.

“It is just 20 days since the last service. Elevators are usually serviced once in 30 days. I even asked Ajith why he had come 10 days early for the  job and he told me that his office had asked him to complete the job, he said.

“He arrived at the building at 7am itself. I told him to wait until about 8am to start the work so that no inconvenience was caused to the office going residents. He started the work an hour later and after a while I heard some weird noise and found the elevator had moved from the tenth floor to the third floor. His body was stuck between the escalator and the building wall upside down,” added the watchman.

Ajith who has been working with Thyssenkrupp for the past year-and-a-half was moved to Sharjah just a week ago.

The owner of the building who resides in one of the apartments in the premises immediately called the police. “Police arrived immediately. But it took more than four-and-a-half hours for the body to be removed,” said an eyewitness.

An Indian elevator repairman died this morning (Sunday) while servicing a broken down elevator in a building in the Rolla area of Sharjah.

The incident occurred at around 8.30am this morning at building No. 172 (popularly known as Usman building) near Parthas.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7 at 12 this afternoon, a resident of the building said: “The cause of the death is still unknown, but from what we know, he died on the tenth floor, which is the topmost floor in the building. Police arrived immediately. Many people are gathered here.”

The lift was broken open and the body was removed at around 1.30pm. “It was taken in several pieces,” said one of the eyewitnesses.

The serviceman has been identified as Ajith, who was an employee of Thyssenkrupp in Dubai.

“An accident occurred this morning when Ajith had gone there to service the lift,” a staff member of the company told this website on condition of anonymity.

“He [had] been working in the company for around two years. Earlier, he was working in a similar position for Kone. He is the only son of his parents,” he added.

Company officials from Dubai have rushed to the spot and an investigation is on to ascertain the cause of the accident.
