Hidden police cameras have caught 144 cars racing at more than 200 km per hour in just over 100 days in the eastern oasis town of Al-Ain.
The cars were caught by Qannas (hunter), a small speed camera that could be carried by policemen or mounted on tripod concealed among plants or trees, the semi official Arabic language daily Al Ittihad said on Sunday.
“We have caught 144 traffic offenses between the start of the year and April 15 involving driving at a speed of more than 200 km per hour,” the paper quoted Colonel Hamad Al Balsoushi, Head of Al Ain traffic police patrols.
“Most of them were caught racing on the internal and external roads of Al Ain…this phenomenon is one of the most dangerous driving practices as it leads to deaths and injuries in many cases.
