Housemaid stops work for not being taken to beauty salon

An African housemaid fought with her sponsor for not taking her to the beauty salon a week after she started work. She also beat up her agent for not letting her walk out in the city to find a new sponsor.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Mohammed, an agent at one of the labour supply companies in Dubai said that this incident happened a couple of months ago.

“The housemaid was from an African country and she had just started working. She asked her sponsor to take her to the beauty salon. The sponsor was shocked, and refused to do so. This ended up in an argument where the sponsor called the office and told us she did not want the housemaid and was going to return her.”

Mohammed added that it is part of the contract signed between the office and the sponsor that the sponsor has the right to return the housemaid within the first three months and get a replacement housemaid if they don't like her.

“When the sponsor return the housemaid, we keep them at the office till we find a new sponsor for them or book a ticket and send them back to their home countries. However, this case was different. This African housemaid insisted on going out of the office to search for a new sponsor. This is against the laws. She can’t just go out like this to find a new sponsor as this will put us and the original sponsor in trouble.”

Mohammed added that he tried to stop the housemaid from leaving the office when she attacked him and slapped him.

“This was the first time I was beaten up by a housemaid. It shocked me and the other staff at the office. We book her a flight ticket and sent her back to her home country.”
