The UAE gives priority to human rights as it opens up to other countries and continuously enacts legislations to keep abreast with global changes, an official at the Ministry of Interior said in press comments published on Monday.

Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nakheera, Director of the Human Rights Division at the Ministry, said the UAE has seen rapid developments in many fields over the past years and this has prompted it to take measures to ensure protection for all.

He said the Ministry of Interior “respects and preserves” the rights of all those who live on its territory in line with the country’s laws and constitution.

“The UAE gives utmost attention to human rights. It is a key issue in the UAE policy and human rights are guaranteed for all in line with the country’s laws and our Islamic religion. Our leaders and all officials are keen on measures that will protect human rights,” he told the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily 'Al Khaleej'.

Nakheera, who also heads the counter-human trafficking unit at the Ministry, said the UAE is also giving priority to fighting human trafficking crimes, which he described as one of the ugliest practices against mankind.

The paper quoted the deputy director of the human rights division, Colonel Mohammed Al Shehi, as saying the Ministry’s efforts in this respect had largely contributed to reducing human trafficking crime rates in the UAE.

“This is because our country has doubled its efforts to combat such crimes and the public have become more aware of the seriousness of these crimes as there has been a large increase in public reporting on such crimes,” he said.

He said other factors include training of law enforcers at the country’s outlets, intensification of patrols and inspections, and stronger coordination with the police and security organisations in other countries.
