Passport copy of Sri Haerani BT Sarip Soma (SUPPLIED)
Abdul Naushad Kannankuzhiyil, 23, from the South Indian state of Kerala is languishing in the Al Ain Central jail for accidentally causing the death of Sri Haerani BT Sarip Soma with whom he was allegedly having an illicit relationship two years ago.
As per his case file accessed by ’Emirates24|7’, Naushad and Soma were going for a ride in his minivan when his girlfriend accidently got thrown off the vehicle. She was reportedly trying to get off the vehicle before her employer who was in another vehicle could spot her.
The court of first Instance convicted Naushad for a year and a month to prison, and his case is pending with the appeals court. He has finished his term in prison a few months ago but is unable to get his release pending a letter of pardon from the deceased’s family. According to the Shariya Law, Naushad faces a death sentence if the victim’s family do not pardon him.
But the convict and his family are in a tight spot as the whereabouts of the girl’s family in Indonesia are unknown, and hence the legal course can be delayed indefinitely.
The Indian embassy has come forward to help Naushad, and is stepping up efforts to trace Soma’s family. According to embassy sources, they have held meetings with the Indonesian officials in Abu Dhabi and have collected details of the deceased, including her passport copy and death certificate. “We have also written to the Indian embassy in Indonesia requesting them to track down the girl’s family,” said the embassy official.
He added that if the girls’ family agree to issue a letter of pardon with or without accepting the blood money, Naushad can escape a death sentence.
Speaking to this website, Sherif, a close relative of Naushad said his friends and family are not sparing any efforts to identify the victim’s family with the help of the Indonesian community in Abu Dhabi.
“We have got a passport copy of the girl and we are approaching every Indonesian citizen, especially housemaids in Abu Dhabi in an attempt to find the family’s whereabouts,” said Sherif . “He was too young when he got involved in an affair with the girl. We don’t want to see his life ruined in prison for a small mistake he committed. We are trying every possible means to help him get out of prison and start a new life,” added Sherif.
