Amjad Baig never imagined that a last-minute gold purchase for his sister before his trip home would prove lucky for him.

“I was shocked when I got the call last night,” he told 'Emirates24|7'. “It took a few minutes for it to sink in.”

He walked away with a whopping 1-kilo of gold at the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) raffle draw on January 10.

The joy is double for Baig, as he’s currently in his hometown Mumbai, and celebrating the win with his family. “They are all so happy, especially my sister for whom I had bought the two chains.”

Baig, who is self-employed, has been based in Dubai for the last two years. “I have never won a raffle before, so this is a new experience, and I’m loving it.”

Pakistan’s Abu Bakar proved luckier as he won 1-carat solitaire diamond without even buying gold.

“I didn’t buy any gold. I just found the coupons lying on the floor, and picked it up and filled out my name and put it in,” informed the 25-year-old a/c worker from Deira.

Clearly, a case of winners keepers, losers weepers.

Bakar is unsure about what to do with the big win. “I haven’t got it yet, so I haven’t planned anything.”
