The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City announced that it would soon open main sections of Al Mafraq Bridge for traffic to facilitate traffic movement before the full completion of the project in October.

Most works on the parts to be opened in August have been completed for traffic on routes from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi to Tareef, Tareef to Al Ain, Tareef to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain to Dubai and Al Ain to Abu Dhabi.

The project is nearly 85 per cent complete, and work is up and running as per the structural plan for the project to be inaugurated in full before the end of the current year which would achieve seamless traffic flow in and out of the capital.

Abdullah Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Municipal Infrastructure and Assets Sector, said: “With the completion of the main stages as scheduled, the project's complementary works will be completed during the next two months. The new Al Mafraq Bridge Construction and Upgrading Project is one of the most important projects in Abu Dhabi city.”

"The project will be inaugurated in phases in accordance with a carefully drawn schedule. Last April, the municipality inaugurated the sector of Abu Dhabi - Al Ain motorway comprising four lanes. Most of the project stages will be completed in August with the sectors of Dubai - Abu Dhabi Road, Dubai - Tareef Road and Tareef-Dubai Road being due for completion in September. The whole project will be ultimately completed in October by completing the last stage in the direction of Abu Dhabi- Dubai.”

The project comprises construction of a main bridge spanning 75 meters consisting of four lanes and shoulder of the road in the direction of Dubai-Al Silaa and another two bridges; one to serve traffic from Abu Dhabi in the direction of Al Shahama and the other for traffic in the direction of Al Ain to Al Silaa. It also comprises several bypass roads to connect traffic between Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Western Region and Northern Region covering a distance of 18km.

The construction of a new upper interchange to replace the existing one at Al Mafraq, which was constructed in 1976, aims to secure the highest standards of service and traffic safety and keep pace with the renaissance and development projects witnessed by Abu Dhabi emirate.

It also provides a solution to the growing and intersecting traffic at this specific location. The project is a distinguished upgrade of the movement of vehicles in all directions as it comprises three different levels.

When designing the project, due consideration was given to the technical feasibility after carrying out surveys to identify the current and future traffic movements during the next 25 years, particularly under the considerable expansion growth in terms of continuing urbanization at Al Mafraq and Bani Yas coupled with the introduction of new residential areas such as Khalifa City, Mohammed bin Zayed City, Al Shamikha and Al Falah and subsequent rapid increase in the transport movement using this interchange.
