A Palestinian man rescued his 14-member family in a massive fire at his house in the eastern oasis town of Al-Ain but his wife died trying to save her five-year-old son, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Ahmed Khaleel was asleep when his wife jolted him out of bed and told him about the fire at their house around 4.00 am last Saturday, Alittihad said.

Ahmed managed to carry his crippled mother and his 75-year-old father out of the house before rescuing his brothers and sisters.

“Ahmed said he started his car and rammed it into the house to make an opening so his family will not die of the smoke,” the paper said.

It said he also rescued three daughters aged 8,10 and 12 years with the help of a police man who rushed to the accident site but his five-year-old son and another son aged eight months remained inside the gutted house.

“Ahmed later learned that his wife Tahreer (liberation) pushed through the fire and went inside the house to save her five-year-old son Khalil…but they both died while the infant was saved by a neighbour who found him trapped among falling furniture,” the paper said.

“I married my wife 14 years ago and I consider her as a martyr because she could have saved herself…instead she sacrificed her life for her son.”
