The UAE Interior Ministry has announced new rules for people travelling by road to Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director of Traffic Coordination at the ministry, said on Tuesday that the Saudi authorities will apply new security measures for the companies operating road transport to the kingdom.
The new measures require the companies to ensure that each luggage item should have a tag bearing the name of the person it belongs to.
"If an untagged luggage item is found to contain prohibited materials, stern legal measures will be taken [by Saudi authorities] against the bus driver and the operating company," Al Zaabi said.
Al Zaabi also said that they received a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informing them that a circular was issued by the Egyptian Customs Department that forbids motorists, other than those permitted, to drive vehicles with temporary entry permit licence plates.
"According to the circular, only the motorist in whose name the permit was issued is allowed to drive the vehicle with temporary permit. In case of violation, the vehicle will be seized and the permit holder will be banned from getting a temporary permit for two years," he said.
