Nine in 10 blocked sites relate to porn, dating

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the UAE has said 89 per cent of Internet content blocked in the country between January and April related to nudity and dating sites. These are inconsistent with the values and ethics of the country, the authority said.

The TRA has confirmed that this percentage constitutes a significant increase in the blocking of banned sites, according to 'Emarat Al Youm'.

The blocked sites related to porn and dating in 2010, however, did not exceed 78 per cent of the total blocked sites.

Three per cent of such sites contained subjects related to hatred of religion while another 3 per cent dis not comply with the laws of the UAE, the TRA said.

Between January and April, The TRA said it did not have to block any websites related to Internet gambling games, sports, lottery, horse raching, car and boats. There were none related to manufacturing or promotion of illicit drugs during the period, it said.
