Now there is good news for people suffering from migraine headaches in the UAE.

University Hospital Sharjah (UHS) has made remarkable progress in the treatment of chronic migraine headaches by using Botox injection.

The UAE is among the first countries in the region to adopt this medical technology.

The new treatment, introduced by Dr Susan Ibrahim Nouri, Neurology Consultant and Multiple Sclerosis Specialist, has been able to effectively deal with numerous advanced migraine headache conditions.

In one particular case, where a patient who was suffering from chronic, nearly daily, migraines, has found relief. The treatment has managed to eradicate the person’s pain for a period of 60 days.

The new treatment is a major step forward in combatting the effects of migraines, which is one of the most common medical reasons for absence from work.

The treatment has been proven to be effective in providing lasting relief, thus contributing to raising individual productivity and enhancing family, career, and social stability.

Migraine symptoms that can be effectively relieved by the treatment include blurred vision, sensitivity to sound and light, and nausea among others.

Speaking on the therapy, Dr Susan Ibrahim Nouri, said: “Treating migraine headaches by Botox involves injecting Botox into 31 sites in the head, neck and shoulder. This treatment is approved by a protocol issued by US Food and Drug Administration, based on the result of studies that showed evidence of improvement through its use.”

She added: “Effective relief is shown in about 7-10 days post injection and the treatment helps stop migraine headache problems for a period up to 3 months, before the Botox fades and a new series of injection is needed to achieve best results.  Botox is a safe, complication free treatment that has been proven successful in curing such diseases as muscle stiffness caused by a stroke, spinal cord injuries, migraine facial paralysis, and inconsistency in hand muscle movement.”

“We are striving to study advanced conditions and are eager to stay abreast with the latest global developments in treatment. I think we will see more progress in treating the disease in the coming period. UAE medicine will prove its competitiveness and enhance its profile after the positive results and high rate of recovery from this disease and through supporting medical research with more findings,” she added.
