Only in Dubai: Talk to me and get an iPhone 6 free

We saw some rather strange ‘deals’ being peddled at the recently concluded Gitex Shopper 2016 spring edition, offering free smartphones to users.

None stranger than the ‘Talk to me and get a free iPhone 6’ placard being flaunted by one of the floor staff. The ‘talk’ was meant to introduce customers to an instalment data package scheme, which would then lead them to having the promised iPhone, bundled with 1,200 flexi minutes and 14GB data.

Also spotted were Dh49 phones and Dh5 ‘chai’.

The Dh49 phone was the Four B 101 Mobile with VGA Camera, Dual SIM-card and FM Radio. “It is a good giveaway gift,” said the sales staff at Four Mobiles. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, the phones came with a 1-year Axiom warranty.

Switch to Du – and get a free phone

“Just register for a new Du mobile phone number, same as your Etisalat number, and you will get a free SIM card and a mobile phone free. It is a mobile phone worth using or gifting to anyone,” a promotion staff at the Du counter told us. What phone, you ask? It was the iPhone 6s you could have had, or even the Samsung Galaxy S7.

Register for instant gratification

If you’d registered as a customer at mysky.ae (an e-commerce portal), you could have received Dh50 in gift vouchers. The firm’s sales executives said each person registering online during the Shopper was set to receive the Dh50 vouchers in their inboxes.
