As a grief-stricken community comes to terms with the heinous murder of young Sharjah boy Obaida Ibrahim Al Aqrabawi last week, Dubai Police has now sent out an appeal to warn children to beware of strangers.
In two separate animated videos, Dubai Police present different premises in which children can find themselves in dangerous situations.
In one animated video featuring the Dubai Police Ambassador of Child Protection, Mohammed Ahmed Jaber, a young boy is approached outside a school as he waits for his pick-up.
The video continues with a car pulling up with a stranger, appealing to young Jaber to hop in his car, but the smart kid refuses to comply. When the stranger insists, the child screams for the police and the car speeds away.
The 15-second video ends with Jaber giving the message: “Say no to strangers”.
A second video warns young ones to say no when an older child offers to accompany them into the bathroom stall.
Presented by Dubai Police and the authority’s Al Ameen Service, the public educational videos come at a time when a community seeks justice for the death of eight-year-old Obaida, who was lured by the accused from his father’s garage and strangled to death; his body also showed signs of a sexual assault.
According to a report in Emarat Al Youm, Obaida’s father is quoted as saying that he knew the defendant for several months after he started frequenting his garage in the Sharjah industrial area.
“I have known the defendant for a few months. He came to have his car repaired and then he started to visit my garage quite often. He used to bring presents to my son and told me he loves him.
“He was letting my son sit with him in the car but I told my son to get out; but I had never predicted that man’s intensions towards my child.”
Obaida’s family, along with that of the accused, have reportedly urged authorities to expedite the process and award the Jordanian national the death penalty.
