Dubai Traffic Police is to submit a proposal to the Federal Traffic Council to reduce traffic issues during peak hours, according to Al Ittihad newspaper.

Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zaffin, Head of the Federal Traffic Council and Assistant Commander of Dubai Police for Operation Affairs, said that the Council would discuss the proposal of staggered work start time for government departments and universities during its next meeting. School timings would also be looked into.

A time lag of 30 minutes during morning peak hours for the government department employees will be proposed.

He added the idea behind change of timing of shifts is to provide a smooth flow of traffic and ease congestion on the roads during peak hours. He said that the movement of staff simultaneously adds to the traffic bottleneck on the roads.

Al-Zaffin pointed out that such ideas have been implemented in many countries and they have proved effective in treating the problem of congestion.

He also revealed that the council would discuss the making the use of minibuses to ferry students illegal, especially since they do not have emergency exits from the ceiling, unlike the big buses, thus reducing survival chances in case of accidents.

The uncomfortable seating arrangement also leads to higher casualties in case of accidents.
