Theft cases have been on the rise in Ajman, with the latest reported from a supermarket. After smashing the glass façade of a two-storeyed Supermarket in Al Zahra area, thieves entered the shop through the external air conditioner box.

“This is the third such incident reported in Ajman recently. The criminals took away telephone cards, Nido bottles, watches, cigarettes and whatever cash was left in the cash box. The CCTV cameras were not working and Ajman Police is investigating the case,” said supermarket sources.

They tried to take away CDs and DVDs and destroyed office files, cheque books and other office items kept in the first floor office. The theft was noticed by supermarket staff who came to open the shop in the morning. Recently, another shop in the area was also looted. “The watchman was tied \and the shop was looted,” said sources familiar with the crime.

This is not the first time that supermarket, grocery or other commercial establishments in the emirate are the target of theft.

Ajman has been witnessing other cases of theft and daylight robberies. “My Toyota Yaris car glass was smashed and it was thoroughly checked out by someone. It happened with another Nissan Sunny parked in the Al Zahra area of Ajman. A few other such cases are reported. The culprits smash the window glass near the driver seat, get inside the car to take out any valuables,” said SN, a victim of such crime.

In October 2010, Emirates 24|7 reported the daylight robbery in Gala Infotech Computer Trading Company in Al Quds Street of Ajman after two thieves overpowered the company staff, tied them and looted the shop. The culprits disappeared with more than 10 laptops. One of the culprits threatened the staff with a knife.

A resident in Al Bustan area of Ajman said: “I am working in the fish market. Recently, somebody broke open my room and disappeared with a suitcase, which contained my passport, trade licence and other documents. I have made a police complaint and am trying to get a new passport. It is a residential building and I don’t know who robbed me.”

Colonel Jassim Rashid Mujlad, Director-General of the police’s Central Operations, said recently that there has been a drop in number of crimes reported in the emirate. Companies and shops are advised to adopt the latest security camera network, directly connected to the Ajman Police headquarters and it is the responsibility of shopowners to keep and maintain the surveillance cameras.
