A wealthy UAE family has been criticised over reports that it had the world’s most expensive cake for a birthday party, costing around $75 million.

Online readers of the report in the 'Daily Mail' and other UK newspapers described it as unnecessary extravaganza that could fee thousands of poor people.

The report said that an unidentified wealthy UAE family paid a staggering £48.5 million ($75 million) for the world's most expensive cake, which features real diamonds.

'Daily Mail' said the giant cake was created by well-known British designer Debbie Wingham, 33, who has turned to baking after previously making the world's most expensive dress for £11.5 million made from black and red diamonds.

She was commissioned to create the masterpiece by one of her clients living in the UAE, who she works with under a non-disclosure agreement.

The cake was then presented to the client's daughter at her joint birthday and engagement party, it said.

“This money can buy 225 large houses in Baghdad,” said Suhaib Al Baraka, according to the semi-official UAE Arabic language daily 'Al Ittihad'.

“A cake for a birthday and engagement party for $75 million…Oh God,” another reader, Mohammed Al Badr said.

“How come a family spends all this money just on a cake,” said Asma Al Hammadi.

“If I have just $1 million it will end the suffering of my family and perhaps my grandchildren," said Bu Mohammed.

“A cake for that price. How many poor people can be fed with this money…. thousands and for a long time,” said Amr Al Marzouki.

“These people seem unaware of those who are starving. This money can buy an entire city for them,” Sabah Al Waleedi said.
