The UAE imported a staggering 50,000 sheep in the first 10 days of November to meet stronger appetites for meat during Eid Al-Adha (feast of sacrifice) starting next week, the semi official daily Alittihad said on Sunday.
The shipments, mostly from India, Australia and other key trading partners of the UAE, are sharply higher than the 36,000 sheep imported in the first 10 days of October, the paper said, quoting Mariam Al Shannasi, spokeswoman at the Minister of Environment and Water.
“We will see more shipments of sheep coming through the country’s outlets in the next two days to meet the rising demand,” she said.
Muslims slaughter sheep and other livestock for sacrifice and giving as alms to the poor during Eid Al Adha while many of them hold feasts for relatives.
Authorities have warned against slaughtering live animals in public on the grounds this cause the spread of diseases. They said slaughtering must be done at the country’s authorized abattoirs.
Sheep prices have sharply risen in the UAE and other Gulf countries over the past week because of the surge in demand.
