In line with directives of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who declared 2015 as the ‘Year of Innovation’ in the UAE, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) launches ‘UAE Innovation Week events’ today [Sunday, November 22].

The launch of the Innovation Week is also part of  the UAE’s National Innovation Strategy launched in October last year by His Highness Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aimed at strengthening the UAE’s position as a global hub for innovation.

The nationwide celebration of innovation will take place from today until Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Police Departments Complex facing Al Mushrif Mall and the Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi. It will include a wide array of events and activities for all, notably the launch of the ‘Innovation Diploma’ programme, in partnership with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), and the signing of a couple of joint cooperation agreements.

Colonel Mohammed Hamid bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Director-General of Strategy and Performance Development at MoI, said: “The ‘UAE Innovation Week’ establishes a new culture across our institutions, based on innovation in all fields. With unrelenting support and follow-up from police leadership, MoI and the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ have established the Innovation Center, the Innovation Lab, and the Creativity Development Programme. This aims to develop innovative solutions to the different challenges facing the UAE society that are closely related to the ministry’s tasks.

“The Innovation Week marks a new era of mature and determined perseverance to pursue additional national efforts towards further development and progress. Through this approach, our wise leadership embodies the serious government, which mobilizes all available resources and creates an appropriate environment for innovation and excellence, while reinforcing its substantial role to empower citizens to be the key pillars of change and innovation,” he added.

The ministry has formed a team to oversee the UAE Innovation Week, which features a myriad of events that aim to leverage innovation in all aspects of institutional work, with positive impacts that can be felt across society, he said and added: “This can be achieved by focusing on several areas, including innovation, child education, social responsibility, mutual visits in partnership with the private sector, as well as lectures, panel discussions, and workshops that would reinforce the culture of innovation amongst staff members, entrepreneurs and community members.”

Al Dhaheri said: “The Ministry will be organising various competitions to develop the MoI’s services and workshops to develop innovative projects using innovation tools. This first set of activities will take place at the Police Departments Complex in Abu Dhabi. The rest of the events will take place at the Marina Mall with morning and evening sessions. Also on the agenda is an Innovation Exhibition, during which the Ministry will present a number of innovative shows, in addition to brainstorming competitions, and other entertaining events for the public.”
