A court in Sharjah sentenced a woman to one year in prison, fined her Dh50,000 and ordered her deportation from the UAE after she was convicted of defaming another woman, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

The defendant had told court she sent insulting texts to that woman after she attacked her in her house but the woman denied such charges.

Police said they found no evidence the woman had entered that house while court examiners found that texts sent by the defendant contained insults and defamation against the other woman, Emirat Alyoum daily said.

“The court sentenced the defendant to one year in jail, fined her Dh50,000 and ordered her deportation from the country…the other woman was acquitted,” the Arabic language paper said without identifying the two women.
