Abu Dhabi authorities have told mechanics and other workshops to shift outside the city within four months in line with a deadline given to them in May 2010, the semi official Arabic language daily Alittihad reported on Saturday.
The new rules affect garages, building materials shops, carpentries, equipment maintenance and repair services, glass and aluminum manufacturing, and other workshops, the paper said, quoting Abu Dhabi Municipality officials.
It said the decision would affect 1,967 shops, which have been told to move to Musafah industrial zone and other areas outside the city before the start of May under a one-year deadline given by the Municipality.
“This is part of an overall plan to improve the image of Abu Dhabi city, ensure a healthy environment, ease bottlenecks and upgrade services of those workshops,” the paper said, quoting an unnamed Municipality official.
According to the report, all those workshops have been told to shift to Musaffah, nearly 20 km outside the capital, while garages and auto spare parts shops have been designated places just in the city’s outskirts.
The decision also includes car servicing and wash facilities but excludes car trading agencies and all vehicle service units owned by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
