Dubai Municipality has mandated installation of fat traps on all drainage lines coming out of restaurant kitchens, commercial kitchens and food-processing units, as stipulated by the Article 15 of Local Order No. 8 of 2002.

This legislation allows the concerned departments in Dubai Municipality to conduct periodic inspection on fat traps to ensure its proper maintenance and cleanliness, the violation of which will cause penalties along  with additional charges for the removal of  any damage to the public sewage network.

Dubai Municipality has taken an additional step creating a safe track for disposal of fat trap waste, which is a residue of frozen and immovable edible oils that extensively damage the level of health and cause to close the drainage lines if allowed to reach the public sewage network in abundance.

To solve this dilemma, Dubai Municipality entered into a strategic BOT partnership agreement with Al Serkal group. Accordingly, the Envirol Plant of Al Serkal Group will take care of recycling edible oils waste and in their first trap waste recycling plant in the region.

Considering the significant increase in number of restaurants in the emirate, Dubai Municipality has permitted  Envirol to charge a utilization fee from the companies operating in the field of maintenance and cleaning of fat/grease trap waste and  the companies shall dispose  the waste at the facility of Envirol located in Al Warsan 2 optionally, by paying a  utilization fees   of Dh1.50 per gallon ensuring the compliance with all environment  laws and regulations.

All these efforts come as part of Dubai Municipality’s keenness in achieving its operational and strategic goals, developing most effective systems to protect a healthy infrastructure and its maintenance.
