The New York City fire department says its computer-aided 911 emergency dispatch system was down for nearly two hours.

FDNY says it was down from about 2:15 p.m. to 4:05 p.m. on Monday.

FDNY officials say dispatchers worked manually to handle nearly 600 calls during the outage and sent out emergency crews by radio.

The FDNY says additional staffers assisted with the calls.

The agency says no calls for life-threatening emergencies came in during the two-hour period.

The agency says it doesn't believe response times were affected or that calls were missed.

It wasn't immediately known what caused the outage.

The system has experienced problems in the past.
