No nuclear radiation leaks from Iran quake: expert

Published

An earthquake that hit southern Iran on Tuesday did not cause any radiation leak from its Bushehr nuclear facilities, a Saudi expert was reported on Wednesday as saying.

Dr Ali Al Shukri, head of the physics science faculty at King Fahd Petroleum University in the eastern port of Dammam, said no radiation reached Gulf countries on the grounds Iran’s nuclear facilities are designed to withstand 8 magnitude tremors.

“Iran’s nuclear facilities are designed in the form of a ground floor building which is equipped with high safety means that can withstand 8 magnitude earthquakes…the quake that hit Iran yesterday was around 6 on Richter scale,” he said, quoted by the Saudi Arabic language daily Sabq.

“All tremors that had hit the (Gulf ) region were below 8 magnitude…therefore, there is no danger of any nuclear leaks to Saudi Arabia and other regional countries as a result of earthquakes,” he said, adding that any leak from Bushehr nuclear plant could reach eastern Saudi Arabia in just one hour.
