Abu Dhabi’s traffic police impounded 297 cars on one day for dangerous violations that marred celebrations marking the UAE national day last week, local Arabic language newspapers reported on Thursday.

Police patrols who expanded their presence on the capital’s streets during the celebrations on December 2 also registered 25,682 traffic violations during the functions that stretched for three days, they said.

“Those vehicles were impounded because they committed dangerous road violations, caused upheaval and disturbed others,” said Lt Colonel Hassan Al Harithi, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Police Department.

“These were uncivilized acts committed by some drivers who spread havoc and insisted on violating rules set by the traffic police for the national day although they were published in all media organs in the country.”

Hairithi said police would take tough measures against those motorists, accusing them of polluting the environment, driving recklessly and dangerously, violating car adornment rules, disturbing other vehicles and pedestrians, going into the wrong direction and jumping the red lights.

“For this reason, we intend to set new rules during events and celebrations, including issuing permits and designating roads and directions to be used in order to ensure maximum safety, preserve the others’ rights and prevent any uncivilized behavior on the road,” he said.
