Civil defence and health teams used a special crane and medical bed imported from the United States to move a local man weighing more than 600kg out of his confinement in his bedroom to hospital for treatment after he waited for more than a year.

Newspapers said King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia ordered the immediate treatment of Khaled Al Shaeri who is suffering from extreme obesity due to health problems that have pushed up his weight to nearly 610kg in just a few years.

They quoted health minister Abdullah al Rabeia as saying the ministry has completed preparations to move Al Shaeri to hospital for a possible gastric bypass operation to reduce his weight after he was confined to bed for many years.

“We have set up a medical committee to visit the patient at the instructions of the Monarch and devise a plan to transfer him to hospital,” he said before Al Shaeri was taken out of his house in the southern province of Jazan.

Newspapers had earlier said the health ministry had imported a special bed and a medical crane from the US to transfer Shaeri to King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh.

Al Saheri had waited for more than a year to be transferred to hospital as several attempts to carry him out of his bedroom failed.
