Bats attack farms in Saudi town

Large swarms of bats are attacking date trees and farms in two Saudi towns at night, prompting calls for help by local residents.

Alyoum newspaper said Saturday the bats have started to swarm hundreds of palm trees and farms in large numbers near a man-made dam between the Western villages of Awamiya and Nassira over the past two months.

“They become active at night and a large number of them sometimes pass just above moving cars…this increases the risk of accidents,” the paper quoted Faisal Al Safwani, a village leader, as saying.

“These nocturnal animals are dangerous to our farms and people…we call on the authorities to take measures to protect our villages.”
