Dead baby sent to family in garbage bag

A hospital in Saudi Arabia sent a dead baby to her family in a garbage bag and officials warned that it could be prosecuted, a local daily reported on Sunday.

The hospital in the southwestern town of Albaha sent the body to the health section in the local municipality to deliver it to relatives, Kabar paper said.

It quoted the municipality’s health services director, Dr Anwar Kathan, as saying the hospital had been rebuked and told not to repeat this act.

“We have not received a complaint from the baby’s family yet,” said Majid Al Shatti, a spokesman for Albaha Health Department. “In case we receive a complaint, we will start an investigation into this serious incident.”

The paper did not mention the infant’s age but quoted one of her relatives as saying he had been shocked when he learned of the incident.
