A 10-member gang led by the son of a serving policeman attached to the Police Garage was arrested with the help of IGP’s (Inspector General of Police) help desk, The Island reported.

The Mirihana Special Crime Operation Unit arrested the gang, posing as Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) officers, on Monday.

Three men among them were attached to the Panagoda army camp, on the outskirts of Colombo.

The extortion racket came to light when a businessman complained to the IGP’s relief desk after Padukka police failed to act on his complaint made to them in November, 2012.

DIG Sumith Edirisinghe had been immediately directed by the Senior DIG Western Province Anura Senanayake to carry out an operation to nab the extortion gang.

The Special Crime Operation Unit, acting on this order, arrested the gang leader, a resident of Grand Pass, Colombo and the rest of the suspects in a house in the Nawagamuwa police area.

The suspects had in their possession two improvised guns and a police ID, police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody told The Island.

The gang had operated in areas like Kadawatha, Grand Pass, Dehiwala, Wattala and Wellampitiya, he said.

The police said that some of the valuables had been recovered but not the cash.

The suspects were between the ages of 27 and 35 and residents of Grand Pass, Wellampitiya, Hanwella, Kaduwela, Welimada and Badulla.
