A bathing middle-aged woman was drowned in Sri Lanka after falling into a well following a sudden embrace by a strange man, the ‘Dinamina’ newspaper reported.

According to a complaint lodged by the area’s residents to the Bakamuna police, a man embraced the woman and jumped into a well, dragging in her as well, in the Aththanakadawala area of Bakamuna on Thursday evening while she was bathing. When he surfaced from the well, the woman was dead, the paper said.

The woman had come to attend a function in a relative’s house and by the time the area’s people rescued the woman, she was dead.

Police said it was a case of mistaken identity as the man was shouting another woman’s name while embracing the dead person and there was no illicit affair between them.
