Top Sri Lankan police officer quizzed over murder

CID in Sri Lanka is questioning Deputy Inspector General Vass Gunawardena over the murder of a businessmen who was abducted in the Bambalapitiya area, according to media reports.

A sub inspector of police and two constables were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the case.

They are charged with abducting a businessman on May 22 and gunning him down.

The three police officers were arrested on the basis of information revealed during interrogations of two suspects who were previously arrested in connection with the crime.

'Black Cat 'robbers nabbed

Sri Lankan police have arrested a man identified as ‘Black Cat’ and three other members of a gang on charges of stealing things worth millions of rupees from 16 houses.

A former sports instructor attached to Sri Lanka Army is one of the group’s members, according to media reports.

The group stole only expensive mobile phones.

The man called ‘ Black Cat’ is also alleged to be involved in drug smuggling.

Big haul of heroin in Welikada Prison

A big stock of heroin was found in Sri Lanka’s Welikada Prison in a raid on Wednesday, Lanka Mirror reported on Thursday.

The wards where remand prisoners are housed was raided by 60 officers attached to the prison intelligence unit at 7.30 pm on Wednesday after taking the inmates out of the ward.

The raid was conducted for over two and a half hours and 28 mobile phones, battery chargers, SIM cards, marijuana, charas (hashish), match boxes, lighters, cigarettes and other illegal things were seized.

Heroin was delivered to the prison by hiding it inside the suspects’ bodies in small polythene packets.

Officials at the prison said a screening machine is needed to detect inmates carrying unlawful things.
