Burj Khalifa elevator provider to build world’s tallest ‘test’ tower

This US-based company has supplied elevators to the 828-meter Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building and many other tall towers in the world, but now Otis is planning to build the world’s tallest elevator test tower.

The elevator test tower in Shanghai will be 270 metres high and it is an anticipated to be the tallest above-ground test tower in the world upon completion.

The tower will be part of the company’s new global research and development facility, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018.

"Building our new test tower and R&D center in Shanghai underscores our continuous commitment to satisfy customers in China and around the world," said Otis President Philippe Delpech said in a statement.

The company has provided elevators for high rises around the world, including the 599-meter Ping’An Financial Center in Shenzhen, one of the highest buildings set for completion this year in China; the 555-meter Lotte World Tower in Seoul, the tallest in South Korea; 553-meter CN Tower in Toronto, the highest in North America and the 324-meter Eiffel Tower, the iconic symbol of Paris.

Fastest ‘double-decker’ elevators

According to building database provider Emporis, Burj Khalifa has the world’s fastest “double-decker” elevators having a capacity of 12 to 14 people per cabin.

The double-deckers' passengers travel the longest distance currently possible in an elevator, exiting after a ride of 504 metres at the world's highest stop. In terms of speed, maximum elevator speed is of 600 metres per minute, or 36 kilometer per hour.

Burj Khalifa has 57 elevators and eight escalators with the building service/fireman's elevator having a capacity of 5,500 kilogrammes and is the world's tallest service elevator, Emaar Properties website states.
