One motorist was killed Monday as the remnants of Hurricane Katia battered much of Britain with winds up to 82 miles (132 kilometres) per hour.

The driver died when a tree hit a car in County Durham, northeast England.

Elsewhere, high waves lashed coastal areas causing ferry companies to cancel scheduled departures, and more trees and branches fell on train tracks and roads. Several major road bridges have been closed to trucks.

CE Electric UK, which provides power in northeast England, said it was working to restore the electricity supply to about 10,000 properties.

Forecasters said gusts of 82 mph were recorded at Capel Curig in north Wales.

Scotland bore the brunt of the bad weather, with blustery showers throughout the day.

High winds also hit Northrern Ireland, with waves breaking over the sea wall along Portstewart harbour on the north coast.
