Police say a passenger bus has plunged into a creek while traveling downhill from a mountainous region southeast of Manila, killing five people and injuring 49 others.
Police chief Senior Superintendent Erickson Velasquez said Sunday that rescuers, who included policemen and firefighters, struggled in the dark for several hours to pull out the dead and injured from the overturned bus at the bottom of the creek in Pagbilao township in Quezon province.
Velasquez says the bus plummeted into the creek while most passengers slept midway through a night trip from central Tacloban city to Quezon city in the capital.
At least 80 people had died in bus accidents since June.
