A 13-year-old Asian girl is being cited as the youngest drug addict in the emirate the Dubai Police have dealt with.
The girl got drugs from a friend through a website, a top official said, adding that they have blocked more than 100 websites promoting drugs in the past three years.
Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Colonel Eid Thani Hareb, Director of Dubai Police Anti-Narcotics Department said that the girl’s mother reported the case to Dubai Police, and her daughter is currently being treated.
“The girl found out about drugs from a website which was promoting some medicines which gives the same high like traditional drugs.
“She talked about this with one of her friends and managed to get these medicines from her friend. The girl’s mother noticed that her daughter was not normal for few days and when she confronted her, the girl admitted that she was taking some medicines which gives the same high like traditional drugs,” Colonel Hareb says.
Colonel Hareb added that the girl’s mother reported the case to Dubai Police and they dealt with the case in a special way because the girl is a minor.
“We helped the mother, and the girl is currently receiving treatment and going through a rehabilitation programme.”
Colonel Hareb stressed on the importance of parents monitoring the time their children spend on the internet, especially if they started isolating themselves from the other family members.
“The problem is that there are many websites which promote drugs or give teenagers and people ideas on how to mix some medicine and get the same high. This is very serious as people might think of trying these things, and eventually end up in addiction,” he adds.
He added that they have blocked 104 ‘drug’ websites till the end of the third quarter of 2014.
“We are monitoring websites all the time, and whenever we find out about at website that promotes drugs addiction we inform the specialised authorities and block such websites. This is very important to protect teenagers and the public from getting exposed to such wrong practices,” he said.
