A bird swooping on waste to hunt for food is quite a familiar scene. But to see a bird picking waste from the ground and putting it in the bin is quite abnormal.

A Saudi newspaper published a picture showing what it said was a crow picking up waste and dumping it into the nearby bin in the Gulf Kingdom.

Sabq Arabic language daily said the picture caught viewers off guard when it was published on social networks while scores of readers sent the paper comments hailing the crow.

One said : “And the crow is still giving lessons to man.”

The paper said this comment was quoted from a story related in the Quran when God sent two crows to the world after Adam’s son Cain killed his brother Abel.

The picture was published on social networks by a Saudi man who said he captured it as he passed in that area in the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah.

Two pictures, carried by Sabq, showed the crow picking up an empty beverage can, flying on top of a nearby waste bin and dumping the can into it.

“God is Great,” one reader said. “Some crows are more civilized than humans,” another reader commented. “How beautiful and wonderful you are… oh crow,” another said.

Sabq quoted another reader as saying in a brief comment: “And the crow is still giving lessons to man,” adding that it was quoted from Al Maaida sura in the Quran.

The sura tells the story of Abel and Cain when they had a rift after making an offering to God. It says that Cain became envious of his brother, and he vowed to kill him.

It talks about how Satan was the one to teach Cain how to kill Abel. Cain took two stones and struck the head of Abel until he died.

Cain did not know what to do with the body until God sent along two crows. Cain observed as the two crows fought, and one killed the other.

The living crow then buried the body of the dead crow. Cain imitated the crows and buried the body of his brother Abel.
