Latvian authorities were hot on the trail of a crafty brown bear named Made on Monday after she made her second breakout from captivity in less than a year.

Made escaped from the Ligatne Nature Park early Sunday evening, police spokeswoman Dace Jukama told the Baltic News Service.

Last August the she-bear spent two days on the lam before being lured back to her enclosure with cakes.

Made has lived in Ligatne, which lies within Gauja National Park some 70 km northeast of the capital Riga, since 1995.

The park has been closed and police have set up roadblocks in the area until Made is found.

She is not thought to pose a serious threat to locals or the cyclists, canoeists and hikers who take to the park in large numbers in the spring.

Wardens have however warned people in the area to be vigilant and not to approach Made if they spot her.

Mature brown bears can weigh from 300 to 780 kilos.

Made shares her enclosure with two males named Mikus and Puika.

Ligatne is home to a wide range of wildlife including wildcats, wolves and bison as well as bears.
