Australia's Moises Henriques was knocked unconscious and broke his jaw in a sickening collision after running into a Surrey team-mate while attempting a catch during an English county Twenty20 match Sunday.

Henriques and Rory Burns clashed as they went for a chance against Sussex at Arundel on England's south coast and the match was later abandoned, with home side Sussex 141 for seven in the 19th over.

However, both Burns and Henriques left the ground "conscious and sitting up".

All-rounder Henriques broke his jaw in three places after he was struck by Burns's knee. The wicketkeeper sustained head and facial injuries.

Both players needed oxygen treatment and three ambulances were called on to the outfield before the pair, who each gave a thumbs-up sign to concerned spectators, were taken to St Richard's Hospital in nearby Chichester for further assessment.

Sussex physiotherapist John Marrale, one of the first to attend to the stricken duo, said: "Both were unconscious after the collision. Henriques was caught by Burns' knee and Burns had lacerations on the top of his head and below his eye.

"They were given oxygen and pain relief was administered by an intravenous drip before they went to hospital."

He added: "Fortunately they were sitting up when they left the ground but it was a sickening incident."

Surrey said Henriques had an X-ray on his jaw which revealed it was broken in three places.

He was "waiting to have an operation. Dental surgery will follow", the club said on its Twitter feed.

"Latest news is that Rory and Moises are both in good spirits in hospital. Rory is waiting to have stitches on head and facial injuries."

Henriques, 28, has represented Australia in all three international formats, most recently in a one-dayer against England at Hobart in January.

Unconscious

Two cricketers were knocked unconscious when they collided in an English county match on Sunday and were taken to a hospital in ambulances that had come onto the field.

Surrey duo Moises Henriques and Rory Burns were injured while going for a catch during a Twenty20 match against Sussex in front of 8,500 spectators.

They regained consciousness at Arundel Castle Cricket Club in southern England before being taken to a hospital, but the match was abandoned.

The 28-year-old Henriques broke his jaw in three places after being struck by Burns' knee, Surrey said on its Twitter account.

Henriques, a Portuguese-born Australia all-rounder who came to Surrey to play in this season's T20 Blast competition, was awaiting an operation on his jaw on Sunday night and dental surgery is also required.

The 24-year-old Burns, an opening batsman who was a graduate of London-based Surrey's academy, required stitches on his head and also had facial injuries, the county said.

"Rory and Moises are both in good spirits in hospital," Surrey tweeted.

Sussex physiotherapist John Marrale described the incident as "sickening" to watch.

"Both were unconscious after the collision," Marrale said. "Henriques was caught by Burns' knee and Burns had lacerations on the top of his head and below his eye.

"They were given oxygen and pain relief was administered by an intravenous drip before they went to hospital. Fortunately they were sitting up when they left the ground."

The collision occurred after Sussex batsman Steffan Piolet launched a huge top edge into the off side. Henriques and Burns were no more than 20 yards (meters) apart when set off, and they collided while running at full pace and fell face down.
