India lose 23-over match against England

England captain Alastair Cook piled more agony on India by hitting an unbeaten 80 off 63 balls in his team’s seven-wicket win in the second one-day international on Tuesday.

Set 188 to win at the Rose Bowl, England chased down its target with five balls to spare in a match reduced to 23 overs a side because of rain, with opener Cook hitting five fours and a six in a man-of-the-match knock.

The Indians slipped 1-0 in the five-match series and have yet to win a match in any format on their tour of England, having previously been whitewashed 4-0 in the Test series before losing the one-off Twenty20 international by six wickets last month.

The tourists made 187-8, with big-hitting opener Ajinkya Rahane hitting 54 to continue his good recent form and Suresh Raina weighing in with 40 off 19 balls.

Cook and Craig Kieswetter shared a first-wicket partnership of 67 runs in six overs to begin the reply, before the latter was trapped lbw by Vinay Kumar having scored a quickfire 46 off 25 balls.

Ian Bell (25) and Ravi Bopara (24) both fell to Ravichandran Ashwin but Cook and Samit Patel (9 not out) steered England home.

Cook praised Kieswetter for getting England off to a fast start as the team chased a tough target.

“It was a decent score but we thought it was a par score if we played well,” Cook said. “Craig played brilliantly at the top of the order and left us just having to milk it to get there.”

England is 1-0 up in the five-match series going into the third game at The Oval on Friday. The first match was washed out on Saturday.

“We try to come up with plans that may work, but not much has worked so far for us,” said India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who led his team to the World Cup title in the 50-over format in April.
