India opener Virender Sehwag has broken the batting world record for a one-day international, surpassing compatriot Sachin Tendulkar's 200 not out set last year.

India, meanwhile closed their innings with their highest-ever one day international (ODI) score of 418-5 against any country setting a run rate target for West Indies of more than 8.36 an over at Indore.

The hard-hitting Sehwag cracked a four through point off Andre Russell to move from 197 to 201 in a match against West Indies at Holkar Cricket Stadium on Thursday. Tendulkar had set the record against South Africa in Gwalior, India.

Sehwag captained India in the absence of regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and was dropped on 170 by West Indies captain Darren Sammy off pace bowler Ravi Rampaul.

Sehwag's 15th ODI century was his first as captain and beat his previous high score of 175 against Bangladesh at the 2011 World Cup.

Sehwag ended his innings at 219.
