Reserve goalkeeper Beto on Wednesday said Portugal can put their opening match horror show behind them and keep their World Cup hopes alive - insisting the reason Ronaldo is playing is that he is fully fit.

Beto insisted that Ronaldo was fit to play despite ongoing speculation about his fitness.

"Ronaldo didn't leave (training) early. He finished his training at the same time as the rest of the players," said Beto.

"Cristiano is 100 per cent fit to play. Every match he starts to play, it's because he's fit to play," said the goalkeeper, who plays his club football for Sevilla.

"He loves football but his body is the most important thing for him, to be fit, to be healthy so if he starts the match it's because he's ready, he's fit."

Ronaldo received a rock star's welcome as Portugal trained at the Estadio Moises Lucarelli in Campinas, outside Sao Paulo, on Wednesday.

It was reported earlier that Ronaldo ended his participation in a Portugal training session early on Wednesday and left the pitch with ice on his knee, Portuguese media reported.

The website of the sports paper Record showed Ronaldo walking off with a large pack of ice attached to his left knee. There was no immediate comment from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

Ronaldo struggled with minor injuries during the closing weeks of Real Madrid's season before playing 120 minutes in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid and scoring the final goal in their 4-1 win with a penalty.

He was rested from Portugal's early pre-World Cup training sessions after being diagnosed with a thigh injury and tendonitis in his left knee.

He stayed on for the whole of Portugal's opening Group G game against Germany on Monday which they lost 4-0.

Reports from Spain claimed Ronaldo had ignored doctors’ advice to play in Portugal’s 4-0 defeat against Germany, and is now being warned his career will be in danger if he does not rest for two months.
