Sir Alex Ferguson is watching with interest as Manchester City winger Adam Johnson is battling to rekindle his England career.

Johnson has become excess at Manchester City and has not featured in the plans of Roberto Mancini who doubts his commitment to defensive duties.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill wants to take Johnson either as a loan or as a permanent deal, according to the Mirror.

Johnson has been high on O'Neill's wanted list this summer as he seeks new recruits to bolster their attack.

Although Johnson's City wages of £50,000 a week could be a problem for Sunderland, they may be subsidised by his parent club as part of any loan deal.

Johnson has lost his place in the international side while struggling for regular football at Eastland.

Ferguson has an opportunity to swoop on the left winger and unleash him against City to gain some measure of revenge for what Carlos Tevez did to Manchester United.
