A famous Bahraini football player was killed in a road crash in Fujairah along with his Emirati friend and police said the driver was likely asleep when the accident occurred.

Mohammed Nouriddeen, who had played for the Bahraini Al-Najma club, died in hospital after suffering from serious injuries in the accident just at the entrance of Fujairah at dawn on Saturday, police said.

His Emirati friend Abdullah Saif Hammad, who was driving the four-wheel Nissan Patrol died instantly in the crash while another Emirati man suffered from medium injuries.

The three were on their way from Dubai to Fujairah when their car went off the road, hit the metal bars on the pavement and rammed into a power pole before overturning many times near Nujeimat intersection in the eastern emirate.

“Nouriddeen had his leg amputated at Fujairah Hospital…doctors raced to save his life after suffering from hemorrhage but he died later,”Fujairah traffic police chief Lt Colonel Hassan Salim said, quoted by ‘Emarat Al Youm’ daily.

The Arabic language paper said Nouridden, who was in the UAE for Eid Al Adha holiday, was one of the best known football players in Bahrain, adding that his Najma club won the King’s Cup twice in 2005 and 2006.

It quoted Salim as saying that the accident occurred around 4.30 am and that the driver and his two friends “were likely tired and asleep at the time of the crash.”
