Liverpool are in pole position to beat Manchester United in the race to sign Blackpool's Thomas Ince.

The Reds have made a bid of £5 million in a dramatic move to take the England Under 21 midfielder back to Anfield, according to the Daily Mail.

Dubbed the 'English Messi', Ince joined Liverpool as a junior in 2008 and was given a squad number at the start of the 2010-11 season.

He never made a Barclays Premier League appearance for them, though, and readily accepted Blackpool’s offer of a two-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months.

United have been linked with the 20-year-old but Rodgers has made the first move in desperated after being left with only one genuine striker in Luis Suarez.

Rodgers was at Bloomfield Road to watch Ince against Brighton last month and he is now said to be ready to make his move, according to The Metro.

Liverpool want to reach an agreement with Blackpool so that the youngster can be transferred to Anfield as soon as the transfer window opens in January.

Both Southampton and Swansea have also enquired about the winger.

Ince's stock rose even higher on Tuesday night when he put in an impressive performance for England under-21s against Northern Ireland.
