Liverpool may pay price for over-confident Carroll

Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool fans must ask the question: did we pay £35 million move to Newcastle for Andy Carroll so that he could score against a Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion?

Like one Carroll does not a Christmas make – the jury is still out on whether Andy Carroll can cut it against the big teams in pressure games.

So far he has failed miserably and despite Liverpool manager King Kenny’s strong words of support after Liverpool’s 6-1 march over Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday, the Liverpool fans are not quite convinced.

Kenny, perhaps learning from the mistake of Andre Villas-Boas and Chelsea in terms of resting players, played the strongest team he has possibly fielded in any competition this season.

Steven Gerard, Luis Suarez and the pony-tailed hitman Andy Carroll. And while the margin of the win may be flattering – Brighton scored three own goals, Dalglish might want to be demanding a bit more out of Carroll.

As Steven Gerrard, who knows what it takes to be a Kop legend succinctly pointed out when asked about Carroll - "(Carroll) has been getting better and better in training.”

So far that translates in to 8 goals the entire season.

Liverpool will look to secure their first trophy since 2006 when they take on Cardiff in the League Cup final at Wembley next Sunday.

"All the lads are looking forward to it. I've never been to a cup final and I cannot remember anything about when Newcastle went, to be honest," he was quoted as saying.

Well, score there Carroll – then perhaps you will begin returning the club’s massive investment.
