Badminton in Dubai has taken another step forward with a further 16 coaches now accredited after completing the BWF Coach Level 1 course last week.

In just over a month 30 coaches have graduated in the first ever badminton coaching courses held in Dubai as part of the Shuttle Time Dubai development programme.

After 14 school teachers received their accreditation last month, this course focused on coaches from academies and clubs across Dubai.

The 13 men and three women learnt the principles of coaching; performance and movement; skill acquisition; techniques and tactics; as well as lesson planning and delivery in the comprehensive course which was held at Dubai Sports World over five days.

The coaches represented badminton clubs and academies in Dubai, including Family Badminton Club; RB Academy; Dubai Badminton; Friday Smashers; India Club; Play to Win; Pro-Academy; Professional Sports Academy, and Prime Star Sports.

The course was held as part of the Shuttle Time Dubai program which aims to encourage participation in badminton across the community.

In addition to the coaching courses and teacher training, Shuttle Time is being implemented through a range of programmes and activities including Schools Championships, the provision of free courts at Dubai Sports World, and the Shuttle Time Dubai Club Championships.

The Shuttle Time Dubai program was implemented as part of the arrangement between the BWF and Dubai Sports Council, the pinnacle of which is the hosting of the Dubai World Superseries Finals in Dubai each December from 2014-2017.

Dubai Badminton Development Manager Jaffer Ebrahim is delighted with the response to the coaching courses.

“The level of interest shown in badminton by the community is quite incredible. Our project to extend the benefits of the sport right across the Emirate is gaining momentum and we are extremely happy with the progress made to date. In fact, we are now looking at running a level 2 course in the near future to take these coaches to the next level. The more qualified coaches we have, the more the sport will grow in the community, as they learn the skills to run badminton programs which are enjoyable and effective and encourage more people to participate.”

With the grassroots programme flourishing in Dubai, interest in the season-ending Dubai World Superseries Finals is building as the world’s best players race to qualify for one of the most prestigious titles on the badminton calendar.

Only the top eight ranked players in each category will qualify to battle it out for their share of the US$1million prize pool, and after a thrilling event last year, this year’s World Superseries Finals from December 9-13 at the Hamdan Sports Complex promises to be even more exciting with qualification points for the 2016 Olympic Games also on the line.
