Disgraced ex-World Series MVP Manny Ramirez was released from jail after being arrested and charged with battery following an alleged bedroom altercation with his wife at their luxury Florida home.
The 39-year-old Ramirez spent one night in jail before being released on $2,500 bail on Tuesday as police released a tape of the 911 emergency call.
“My husband just hit me,” said the woman caller. “I have a bump on my head.”
Told by the dispatcher that she should seek out a safe room in the house, she said, “He’s not doing anything anymore because he knows I’m calling the police.”
The 12-time all-star was charged with domestic battery and told to stay away from his wife, Juliana Ramirez, who declined to receive medical assistance. He could get up to a year in jail if convicted.
Ramirez refused to speak to reporters as he left the jail on Tuesday in a white Cadillac Escalade driven by a woman who identified herself as his sister.
Ramirez responded with “not my problem” to a reporter’s request to let him tell his side of the story.
Ramirez denied hitting his 32-year-old wife and in the police report told investigators that he “shrugged” his wife, causing her to hit her head on their bed.
Ramirez, who was named Most Valuable Player of the 2004 World Series, retired in April rather than face a 100-game suspension for a second violation of the league’s drug policy.
Two years ago, Ramirez served a 50-game suspension when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In July 2008, the Boston Red Sox traded Ramirez to the Dodgers, where he became a favourite with fans.
After leading the Dodgers to the National League West title, the club signed him to a $45 million, two-year deal.
But Ramirez fell out of favour with the Dodgers after testing positive for a female fertility agent, human chorionic gonadotropin, which is commonly used as a masking agent for steroids.
Ramirez retired after getting just one hit in 17 at-bats for the Tampa Bay Rays.
