French boat Groupama kept alive its hopes of taking the outright lead in the Volvo Ocean Race on Wednesday after draining more than a ton of water from inside their boat because of a leak.
Crewman Brad Marsh spent three hours fixing the leak in a water storage tank as Groupama sought to pass leader Abu Dhabi in the final 24 hours of the 3,600-mile seventh leg through the north Atlantic from Miami to Lisbon.
With less than 400 miles left, all six teams are in with a shot of winning the leg after slowing due to light winds off the coast of Portugal.
Victory for Groupama could give it the overall lead with two legs to go if Spanish challengers Telefonica finish no higher than third.
