A hot Argentine tango routine gave the United States their first major ice dancing title as Meryl Davis and Charlie White took gold at the world figure skating championships on Saturday.

The US dancers finally came out of the shadows of Olympic and world champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada behind whom they took silver at both the Vancouver Games and last year's worlds.

Their selection of tangos sealed gold with world record marks in the free skate (111.51) and overall total (185.27).

It is the first world title for the United States in the discpline which is the only figure skating category in which they had never won a world gold.

Overnight leaders Virtue and Moir had been making their return to full competition after Virtue underwent surgery for the second time on both her shins six months ago.

They returned in February for the Four Continents but were forced to withdraw during the free dance.

The Canadians had led the Americans by just under one point after the short dance, but despite scoring high points 107.50 for their Latin-American rhythms for an overall 181.79 they had to settle for silver.

Brother and sister team Maia and Alex Shibutani claimed bronze at their first worlds as
European champions Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat of France's chances tumbled when they fell during their Charlie Chaplin routine.

The three couples are trained in the United States by Russians Igor Shpilband and Marina Zueva.
